Sex and Poverty: On the Possible Role of Female Legislators in Reducing Poverty

Women are often depicted as more nurturing and compassionate.  Public opinion analysis seems to bear this out.  Another possible line of evidence comes from data provided by the American Human Development project.  I found that there was less poverty in states where there were more women in state legislatures.  The relationship between the percentage of female representatives and poverty (both overall and child poverty) is statistically significant, even when education is held constant.  Correlation or causation?
